Institutional racism dominates the discussion at nearly every university in the country. Academics and students alike seek and discover racism in every aspect of society, whether it’s valid or not. The great irony is that these institutions who fancy themselves bastions of equality often perpetuate the bias they claim to fight. For instance, at Berkeley in 2016, a mob of students blocked Caucasian students from entering the university. The “demonstrators” were protesting for “safe spaces” for persons of color and LGBTQ. One demonstrator made the event’s intent very clear to a white student who attempted to enter through the university’s front doors, “This is bigger than you. This is about whiteness”, he said. The mob then screamed at the white students, “Go around, go around.” These targeted students had to walk through the brush and traverse dirt paths to find a side or back door into the school.
Following the logic of protesters at Berkeley and many other universities, the conclusion you arrive at is quite alarming – white students are guilty because they are the same color as racists from the Jim Crow era and need to get in the back of the bus to make room for people who matter more. Hmmm, sound familiar? I think Rosa parks would see the symmetry. One thing is crystal clear here: radical leftists in universities have no sense of irony as they block the doors of schools just like democrat George Wallace did at the University of Alabama in 1963 and said, “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”
Did the protesting students take a pause and consider they’re telling a racial group, in this case, white students, that they were born bad? That the mere sight of them is intolerable? That because of their color and genetics that there is no possibility of redemption? Obviously, the answer should be an emphatic NO, but it seems, by their rhetoric, that it’s a YES. Sadly, the behavior of this sort is permissible and encouraged on our university campuses across the nation and protected under the moniker “Social Justice,” which it is not. When you look at the Berkeley incident through the lens of history, there is no mistaking that it is an echo from a dark time in our nation’s past.
The Berkeley incident occurred in 2016 and is a disturbing theme that has gained strength ever since, infecting academia from top to bottom, which brings us to our WOKE Award of the week. Washington and Lee University law professor Brandon Hasbrouck has decided that African Americans’ votes should count twice, in what he calls “voter reparations.” In his own words, he says, “another way to undo the damage of the Electoral College and other structurally racist political institutions: We can implement vote reparations by double-counting ballots cast by all Black residents.”
Mr. Hasbrouck indicts the Electoral College as “racist” when, in fact, it is the embodiment of equality. The electoral college protects less populous states from large population centers by giving every state one electoral vote for each Senator and one for each member in the house of representatives. Each state gets two Senators regardless of population, and house members are chosen based upon population. However, a state can have one representative irrespective of population. This system gives smaller states a voice they otherwise would not have regarding resources, local values, and regional concerns that help grow and support economies across a much larger geographical swath of America, giving ladders of opportunity to more people. Eliminating the Electoral college would remove diffuse representation and concentrate the bulk of presidential voting power in a handful of large cities.
Brandon Hasbrouck is proposing the equivalent of George Orwell’s animal farm where “some animals are more equal than others.” He’s telling everyday Americans, based on their race, that they don’t deserve the power of their vote relevant to the state they occupy. He wants to impose a bizarre iteration of the Three-fifths compromise in 1787, where three out of every five slaves would be counted toward a state’s population, thus determining the number of representatives in the house. Hasbrouck’s version of the Three-fifths compromise proposes doubling the average number of African American votes cast in Presidential elections from roughly 17 million to 34 million by counting them twice. This would effectively wipe-out 17 million white individuals’ votes, resulting in substantially reduced representation in presidential elections. Since the math is slightly different from in 1787, Brandon Hasbrouck should call his idea the Four-fifths compromise or simply, The Hasbrouck Compromise. And, of course, the Democrat party will support this idea because blacks vote democrat 90% of the time on average. They know a policy of this nature would make it highly unlikely for a republican ever to occupy the oval office again.
Brandon Hasbrouck has a severe misunderstanding of presidential history when he states the following:
“Because white votes currently count more than Black ones, double-counting Black votes would restore electoral balance. To address systemic racism, we must transform how we choose our government.”
Obviously, Hasbrouck is oblivious to the number of democrats versus republicans who have been president for the past 85 to 90 years. During the better part of the last century, there have been seven democrat and seven republican presidents. The total number of years Democrats have been in office over this time frame is 57 years compared to 42 years for republicans. Blacks overwhelmingly prefer democrat presidents, so why does Brandon Hasbrouck say, “Voter reparations would be a giant step toward remedying our nation’s long history of denying and devaluing Black votes?” The answer is simple: he only wants the votes of one race to matter, which makes him the racist he accuses everybody else of being.
Brandon Hasbrouck’s plan to reduce equality in America by erroneously assigning “racist” to the electoral college is a malicious attempt to vaporize millions of people’s votes because they don’t share his skin color. He employs Orwellian doublespeak by positioning himself as the guiding light of social justice, when in fact, he’s carrying the torch of racial hatred not seen since the early 1900s. This mentality is typical in the WOKE crowd, and Brandon Hasbrouck did not disappoint. Congratulations to Brandon for earning this week’s WOKE Award.
