Today we are faced with yet another worrisome shocking headline: Fox News – “More than 100 million people in China face new lockdown as second wave of COVID-19 cases emerge.” Oh, dear, is this second wave coming to America?
At first glance, we don’t read the words “face new lockdowns” – we merely see the shocking numbers of “100 million people” in China. Fox News states the following:
Nearly 108 million people in China’s Jilin province could be forced back into lockdown after a growing group of new Coronavirus infections triggered a backslide in the nation’s push to return to normal. The abrupt reversal in China’s northeast region has once again cut off public transportation, closed schools, and led to another round of quarantine. Fan Pai, who works at a trading company in the nearby province of Liaoning, told Bloomberg News that people are starting to feel “more cautious” again.
Fox News source for the article is Bloomberg News. It’s behind a paywall for many frequent readers, so you might not be able to read it – convenient? In any case, let’s head on over to Bloomberg News and see what they say. Their headline says – “Over 100 Million in China’s Northeast Face Renewed Lockdown.” Pretty much the same headline as Fox News. Bloomberg News states:
Some 108 million people in China’s northeast region are being plunged back under lockdown conditions as a new and growing cluster of infections causes a backslide in the nation’s return to normal [this sounds as if it is a fact]. The government of Shulan, a city in Jilin, said on WeChat Monday it would put in place its strictest measures yet to contain the virus. Residential compounds with confirmed or suspected cases will be closed off, with only one person from each family allowed to leave to purchase essentials for two hours every two days. The article sites 34 infections, presumably new cases of COVID-19.
Indeed looking at the WeChat social media announcement citation from Bloomberg News, it translates from Chinese to: “[Notice] Shulan City further strengthens the prevention and control of the epidemic and implements the strictest control measures.” It then goes on and gives the lockdown details. But the lockdown only applies to the city of Shulan, China, which has a population of about 630,000.
So, where does the 100 million in China going into lockdown number come from? We presume this is an extrapolation of past events. The thinking is that the Chinese may lockdown the entire Jilin region and not just the city of Shulan. But this is an assumption, not a fact as of the date of this post.
So now, are we are ready to “rev” up the media echo chamber? The Hill is the first to come out with the shocking headline: “More than 100 million people in renewed lockdown in China after a spike of new coronavirus cases.” The Hill citing Bloomberg News states:
More than 100 million people in China’s northeast region are once again under lockdown restrictions after new cases of coronavirus have emerged in the region over the past few weeks, according to Bloomberg News. They were basically regurgitating Bloomberg News. It’s not clear where the cluster of new cases originated, but health officials say it may have to do with people returning from Russia.
The Straits Times – Coronavirus: “Over 100 million in China’s north-east thrown back under lockdown.” Again citing the Bloomberg News article.
The Daily Mail – “Fears of new coronavirus outbreak in the Chinese region of 100million people after two cities went into Wuhan-style lockdown.” Though a bit shocking, at least the Daily Mail did not state the massive lockdowns as fact.
National Post “More than 100 million people in China’s northeast back under lockdown to thwart potential second wave.”
So let’s get this straight. From a WeChat social media posting, of a town in China of 690,000 people, posted on a pro-Democrat “news” website, behind a paywall, where they cite 34 COVID-19 infections – we now have a second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic affecting 100 million people? Perhaps one day this may come true, but why report this story in this way? Is this story an effort to obtain clickbait or some kind of psyop – to convince people to be afraid and stay locked down until the economy goes into an economic malaise for an ulterior political motive?
