Soft porn! It’s what Gwyneth paltrow wants to put under your Christmas tree!

Gwyneth Paltrow is an actress who created a wellness brand known as Goop. Her latest promotional foray is an ad shocking even by her past standards.

Andrew Breitbart is quoted as saying, “politics is downstream from culture.” The play on words is a nice inverse of James Carville’s, “It’s the economy, stupid!” Breitbart knew if you can change the culture, you can change the government. Many Hollywood stars have taken their platforms to push political agendas. Industry leaders and stars have also started organizations and businesses which cross-brand over multiple platforms to achieve maximum awareness.

Goop is centered entirely around Gwyneth as a spokesperson selling pseudoscience for exorbitant prices. The company has branched out rapidly over the years, starting as a magazine, then an online and in-store seller of multiple product lines, the latest being clothing. The actress and her business have been wildly mocked for such things as promoting vaginal steaming, Sex dust, Jade egging and earthing, just to name a few. Goop wraps all their product lines in the eco-friendly and or women empowering tag lines. Paltrow is even negotiating with Netflix for a docuseries on her Goop modern lifestyle set to air in 2020.

Sex sells! Sensationalism seems to be at the core of all successful Ad campaigns, and for digital, shocking sensationalism is the recipe for going viral. Many organizations like PETA, Greenpeace, and Planned Parenthood have taken to explicit sexual tones to drive interest. Most recently, The Woman’s March adopted hats that resemble vaginas in their quest to generate buzz and energy.

Paltrow has just dropped a brand new Holiday digital Ad to promote her clothing line complete with double fists martinis, simulating stroking of a penis, and gifting herself a dildo in her Christmas stocking. This targeted Christmas campaign opens with Paltrow seductively prancing with the narrator provocatively saying, “The holidays are here. Because they never turn out how you imagine, you must cherish the joy of getting ready. First, put on a record to set the mood. Oh yeah. Do everything in slow motion. Make this feeling last.” Watching online, the Ad provides a link to the Goops holiday gift guide, where for only $1,350 you can purchase ‘Restraining Arts Kit.’ Nothing says “Jesus is the reason for the season” more than, “a beginner’s guide to BDSM,” complete with “DIY restraining straps, to help you, him, or her assume the position.”

The word “cheeky” is being used to describe this Ad. But self-promotion on the back of the birth of Christ complete with simulating jerking off and vibrators constitutes a wtf moment for me. Can you imagine if the same ad was presented to celebrate Ramadan? Back to “politics is downstream from culture.” Let us take a look at cultural drivers. Here are just a few of the headlines about said Goop Holiday message.

  • Buzz Feed – “Goop’s Christmas Ad Is A Guide To Getting Ready That Includes A Vibrator, Staring into the Abyss, And “Double – Fisting. I, too, shall be staring in the void of misery this Christmas Happy Holidays!”
  • People – “Gwyneth Paltrow Gives Herself A Vibrator for Christmas in a Cheeky Goop Holiday Commercial.”
  • Yahoo – “All Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop Want for Christmas is a Candy Cane Vibrator.”
  • ETONLINE – “Gwyneth Paltrow Gives Herself a Vibrator in Racy Goop Holiday Commercial.”

Goop got exactly what they desired. Buzz and clicks and more $$$.

But at what cost? Is there a cost to having no line blurred? A few years back, Larry David urinated on a painting of Jesus in the series Curb Your Enthusiasm. I remember thinking at the time, this level of sacrilege masquerading as entertainment would not stand. Not only did it remain erect, future displays of disrespect to the Christian religion only multiplied across all cultural venues. It has become cool to denigrate all things Christian and yes, the birth of Christ, and the season we celebrate that birth is Christian. Too reactive, you say?

Time magazine’s 2016 headline read, “Regular Christians Are No Longer Welcome in American Culture.

Lady Gaga ended her concert by condemning Vice President Mike Pence for being the “worst representation” of Christianity. Gaga then took aim at the second family, saying she’s a real Christian, but they aren’t because they support biblical marriage. A young boy and his entire Christian school were wrongfully targeted then vilified on major networks for wearing a Trump hat. In America today, all cultural drivers mock and smear the very essence of Christianity and the divine nature of Christ and offer no respect to those who worship Christ. It has become permissible to present Christ as a permissive, sex-crazed action figure, or worse, like in Comedy Central’s JC series or on South Park. The goal is to make those who adhere to Christian beliefs outcasts from the secular square and morally repugnant. Christians are depicted as anti-science and not well educated all as a means to shun and silence this sector of our society, which reflects the opposite value system than our cultural pillars.

Paltrow’s goal was to make a controversial ad to generate views and purchases. But was that the only goal? I suggest her choice to use Christmas and explicit sexual themes aligned with a larger agenda. What is it?

Yes, sexuality has been weaponised and aimed at each one of us. The assault on sexual order is a deliberate attack on civilization itself which depends on the ordered behaviour of each person. The author is not “Too reactive” at all and it is the deliberately provocative, sacrilegious and blasphemous acts of those who hate Christianity that are out of line and too reactive. Yes, politics is downstream of culture. Once you warp people’s sexual behaviour then the politics will follow. Seduce the people with the freedom of sexual liberation and you crack the foundations of the natural, organic family… Read more »
